Art by Phil Frost

2005: Phil Frost "Seek Truth and Stay True To Yourself"

Taken from the BLAG book 'Art'

You’re self-taught, do you have any advice for anyone looking to go their own way?

“Seek Truth. Stay true to yourself. Invigorate discipline in your mind and life. Keep straight and stay away from superficial surface scenes and their ideals, which will only serve to dupe you into mediocrity. Stay tight - in solitude there is so much to experience. Praise God for all of your blessings. Share and help others.”

What are the highlights for you in your line of work?

“Painting, and the honour to interpret experiences gesturally as line, form, and colour. Scavenging for materials. Interacting and sharing life with people whom I respect and admire. Being able to spend time absorbing things that I am culturally inspired by and learning from them.”

Is there any song and/or film that has been particularly inspirational to you?

“Films are neat. Sometimes I watch them, but not very often. I’m more inspired by ballet and opera. I’m not sure if I can say I’m inspired by any one particular song, but I’m inspired by music itself in many different ways.”

What are you listening to at the moment?

“I have this tape of Eddie Sutton from Leeway singing over Merauder music that I have been listening to over and over, as I work.”
